JUBILEE – Its Meaning for You and Me
The Sabbatical Year
Exodus 23:10-11, "You
shall sow your land for six years and gather in its yield, but on the
seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the needy of
your people may eat; and whatever they leave the beast of the field may
eat. You are to do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove."
Leviticus 25:1-8,
"The LORD then spoke to Moses at Mount
Sinai, saying, "Speak to the sons
of Israel and say to them, 'When you come into the land which I shall give you,
then the land shall have a sabbath to the LORD. Six years you shall sow your field, and
six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its crop, but during the
seventh year the land shall have a sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD; you shall not sow your field nor
prune your vineyard. Your harvest's aftergrowth you
shall not reap, and your grapes of untrimmed vines you shall not gather; the
land shall have a sabbatical year. All of you shall have the sabbath products of the land for
food; yourself, and your male and female slaves, and your hired man and your
foreign resident, those who live as aliens with you. Even your cattle and the
animals that are in your land shall have all its crops to eat. You are also
to count off seven sabbaths of years for yourself,
seven times seven years, so that you have the time of the seven sabbaths of years, namely, forty-nine years."

The Jubilee –
Leviticus 25:9-55
9 'You shall then sound a ram's horn abroad on the
tenth day of the seventh month; on the day of atonement you shall sound a horn
all through your land. 10 'You shall thus consecrate the fiftieth year and
proclaim a release through the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, and each of you
shall return to his own property, and each of you shall return to his
family. 11 'You shall have the fiftieth year as a jubilee;
you shall not sow, nor reap its aftergrowth, nor
gather in from its untrimmed vines. 12 'For it is a jubilee; it shall be holy to you.
You shall eat its crops out of the field. 13 'On
this year of jubilee each of you shall return to his own
property. 14 'If you make a sale, moreover, to your friend or
buy from your friend's hand, you shall not wrong one another. 15
'Corresponding to the number of years after the jubilee, you shall buy from
your friend; he is to sell to you according to the number of years of crops. 16
'In proportion to the extent of the years you shall increase its price, and in
proportion to the fewness of the years you shall diminish its price, for it is
a number of crops he is selling to you. 17 'So you shall not wrong one another, but you shall fear your
God; for I am the LORD your God. 18 'You shall thus observe My
statutes and keep My judgments, so as to carry them out, that you may live
securely on the land. 19 'Then the land will yield
its produce, so that you can eat your fill and live securely on it. 20
'But if you say, "What are we going to eat on the seventh year if we do
not sow or gather in our crops?" 21 then I will so order My blessing for you in the sixth year that it will bring
forth the crop for three years. 22 'When you are sowing the eighth year, you
can still eat old things from the crop, eating the old until the ninth year
when its crop comes in. 23 ¶ 'The land, moreover,
shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are but aliens and
sojourners with Me. 24 'Thus for every piece of your property, you
are to provide for the redemption of the land. 25 'If a fellow countryman of
yours becomes so poor he has to sell part of his property, then his nearest
kinsman is to come and buy back what his relative has sold. 26 'Or in case a
man has no kinsman, but so recovers his means as to find sufficient for its
redemption, 27 then he shall calculate the years since its sale and refund the
balance to the man to whom he sold it, and so return to his property. 28 'But if he has not found sufficient means to get it back
for himself, then what he has sold shall remain in the hands of its purchaser
until the year of jubilee; but at the jubilee it shall revert, that he may
return to his property. 29 'Likewise, if a man sells a dwelling
house in a walled city, then his redemption right remains valid until a full
year from its sale; his right of redemption lasts a full year. 30 'But if it is
not bought back for him within the space of a full year, then the house that is
in the walled city passes permanently to its purchaser throughout his
generations; it does not revert in the jubilee. 31
'The houses of the villages, however, which have no surrounding wall shall be
considered as open fields; they have redemption rights and revert in the
jubilee. 32 'As for cities of the Levites, the Levites have a
permanent right of redemption for the houses of the cities which are their
possession. 33 'What, therefore, belongs to
the Levites may be redeemed and a house sale in the city of this possession
reverts in the jubilee, for the houses of the cities of the Levites are
their possession among the sons of

Other Passages
1. Isaiah
61:1-3, "The Spirit of
the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to
the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty
to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the
favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To
comfort all who mourn, To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland
instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise
instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified."
2. Ezek.
46:16-18, "Thus says the

if he gives a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, it shall be his
until the year of liberty; then it shall return to the prince.
His inheritance shall be only his sons'; it shall belong to them. The prince
shall not take from the people's inheritance, thrusting them out of their
possession; he shall give his sons inheritance from his own possession so that
My people will not be scattered, anyone from his possession.'"
3. Numbers
36:1-4, And the heads of the

the fathers' households of the sons of Israel,
and they said, "The LORD commanded my lord to give the land by lot
to the sons of Israel as an inheritance, and my lord was commanded by the LORD
to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to
his daughters. But if they marry one of
the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, their inheritance will be
withdrawn from the inheritance of our fathers and will be added to the
inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; thus it will be withdrawn from
our allotted inheritance. When the jubilee

REDEMPTION – REDEEMER
The NT teaching
about OUR REDEMPTION must be understood in connection with the JUBILEE
1. Jesus is OUR REDEEMER
Titus 2:11-14, For the grace of
God has appeared, bringing
salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires
and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the
blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and
Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every
lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession,
zealous for good deeds.
Romans 3: 21-24 But now apart
from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by
the Law and the Prophets,
even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for
all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God, being justified as
a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
Ephesians 1: 7-8 In Him we have redemption
through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses,
according to the riches of His grace
which He lavished on us.
1. The Law of Moses = Bondage, Death
2. Christianity =
Gal. 5:1, It was for freedom that
Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again
to a yoke of slavery.
1 Peter 2:16, Act as
free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but
use it as bondslaves of God.
OWNERSHIP – STEWARDSHIP
1. All things belong to God
2. You don't OWN anything
3. You use it and it is returned to God
1 Cor. 3:21-23, So then let no one
boast in men. For all things belong to you, whether Paul or Apollos
or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present
or things to come; all things belong to you, and you belong to Christ;
and Christ belongs to God.
INHERITANCE

everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or
children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much,
and will inherit eternal life."

1 PET. 3:8-12, To sum up, all
of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in
spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing
instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you
might inherit a blessing. For, "THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE,
TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM
SPEAKING DECEIT. HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM
EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT. FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE
RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS
AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL."
